Russian hackers attacked the largest gaming complex in Las Vegas
The information about the hacking of the hotel and casino in Las Vegas, which belong to the largest corporation, has appeared on the Internet. These objects are part of the famous MGM Resorts complex. The computer network was hacked by hackers from a group of BlackCat. Most of the group's members are Russians, but there are some who were born in the United States. A little later it became known about another attack, which was directed against another large casino and hotel chain Caesars Entertainment
After the hack, virtually all equipment in hotels and casinos failed. Even the electronic locks in the guest rooms had problems. Naturally, slot machines and other gaming equipment also stopped working. A powerful cyberattack led to the fact that the security services of the complexes for several days could not eliminate the consequences. As a result, some guests were locked in their rooms, from where they had to be rescued by the hotel staff, literally breaking down the doors.
Russian hackers demanded a gigantic sum of 30 million dollars from the victims. It is known that one of the complexes, in order to avoid publicity among visitors, even agreed to pay the criminals 15 million dollars. Later, the owners of the establishment wanted to write off these funds for minor costs.
The hacking scheme turned out to be simple as hell. One of the hackers (a native speaker) simply pretended to be an employee and sent a request to the company's support service to change his password. All actions were carried out via the business social network LinkedIn (access to it is restricted in the Russian Federation). The hacker pretended to be a member of the MGM team. Having obtained a new password, the hacker group carried out a massive cyberattack on the computer network. It took the hackers only 10 minutes to do the whole thing. As a result, the group gained access to the engineering networks of several gaming complexes and casinos, as well as personal data of some guests and employees.
As a reminder, the MGM group owns such luxury hotels and casinos as. Aria Resort & Casino, Bellagio, MGM Grand Mandalay Bay. etc. In the end, the security services still managed to cope with the attack of hackers, but serious financial losses casinos and hotels still suffered. It is not known whether at least part of the funds demanded by the criminals was paid out.
