Profits of gambling operators increased significantly
As the latest statistics have shown, in almost all countries where virtual and land-based gambling is allowed, operators' profits for 2022 and early 2023 have increased.
For example, the Finnish monopoly operator Veikkaus showed statistics that differ significantly from the data of previous years. Last year it made a profit of 1.07 billion euros, which is quite a large amount for a small northern country. In addition, the operator's terrestrial operations are also showing good revenue growth. After pandemic restrictions that were imposed for more than two years in a row, all of Finland's land-based rooms and casinos operated without restrictions all last year and never closed down.
Denmark's state-owned operator also recently reported an increase in revenues over the past year. Danske Spil's total revenue amounted to almost 5 billion kroner (about 670 million euros). The growth compared to 2021 is obvious - more than 3%. Lottery ticket sales have also increased. However, the profit of online casinos in 2022 in this country fell compared to 2021. This is explained by the fact that last year there were no restrictions on playing in land-based establishments, which means that players from online began to move back to offline.
In Italy, online bookmakers reported increased profits last year. The growth amounted to more than 5%. The leader in this area was the operator Lottomatica with an increase in revenues by 18,03%. At the same time, the profit of land-based BC outlets decreased, however, insignificantly (within 1 percent).
Such different statistics by country is difficult to explain, but experts believe that it's all about the mentality of citizens. For example, Finns are considered not the most gambling nation, but the growth in revenues across the entire gambling sector shows that even in this country, the lifting of restrictions in land-based casinos has not greatly affected online players. Most of them still prefer to spend their time in virtual rather than traditional casinos.
