Getting a Curacao license will be more difficult
A few days ago, there was some not-so-pleasant news for operators of numerous online casinos. From September 2023, the Curacao Gaming Commission is going to seriously tighten the requirements for issuing licenses for the provision of gambling services. Let us recall that in recent years, this document was considered the most accessible and therefore has always been in demand among entrepreneurs opening virtual casinos.
As stated by representatives of the organization issuing licenses, the gambling commission is thus trying to level out the not-so-good image of the state, which often issued documents to companies that conducted dishonest business, working according to "gray" schemes. In the very near future, so-called master licenses and sublicenses will be cancelled. Very soon, Curacao will issue documents directly, directly to operators of gambling establishments. This will allow, if necessary, to hold them accountable in full compliance with the standards adopted in the international gambling industry.
This important information was communicated to the public on June 22 by the Minister of Finance of Curacao at the iGaming NEXT Valletta 23 conference. Also, the official said that he and the government are fully aware that urgent measures and actions need to be taken in the licensing area, as the situation with Curacao licenses is very, very alarming. In addition, the minister stated that the country is engaged in the fight against money laundering and is ready to protect players in the same way as other jurisdictions.
The new law is currently being considered by the country's parliament. Once it is adopted and signed, all operators operating under a state license will have to obtain a new one that complies with the updated legislation. Most likely, many online casinos will be left without permits in the near future. Because they have "tarnished the reputation of Curacao" (the words of the state's finance minister).
